Where America keeps its gold
Fort Knox holds 56.3% of the U.S. government's reported gold. Treasury's 30 September 2026 snapshot totals 261.499 million fine troy ounces, with most of the rest at West Point and Denver.

Fort Knox is the largest part of a wider reserve
Treasury reports gold in three deep-storage locations, Mint working stock and Federal Reserve custody. Fort Knox alone holds more than West Point and Denver combined. The three deep-storage locations together account for 93.8% of the reported total.
“Fine troy ounces” measures the gold content rather than the gross weight of alloyed bars or coins. The poster combines eight Treasury entries into five groups; the table below retains all eight. Working stock includes coins, blanks and miscellaneous gold across Mint locations, so it is not a fourth vault.
Custody does not mean ownership
The Federal Reserve entries are Treasury-owned gold held in custody. They do not represent all gold stored at the New York Fed, which also holds gold for other depositors. This is a storage report for U.S. government gold, not a count of all gold physically inside the United States.
The Treasury report also records a statutory book value. That accounting amount is not a current market price or a sale valuation, so the graphic compares quantities rather than dollars. For the site's separate country comparison, see official gold reserves by country.
